Mariya belongs to a poor family who live in Koilmukku in Edathua region of Alleppey district in Kerala. Her father is a chronic asthma patient and works as a daily wage labourer to feed his family of four. His physical condition deters him from being able to work on all days of the month. Mariya’s family lives in a two room house gifted by the local Panchayath in a flood prone colony where most people survive on daily wages for their living. In the devastating floods that hit Kerala in 2018, Mariya’s house suffered extensive damages. They have not been able to get it completely repaired due to lack of financial resources. The family relies on a kiosk tank provided by the government for their drinking water needs. The people in the area face threats of contracting water borne diseases such as Malaria and Dengue, especially during the monsoon season.

Mariya is not only an excellent student having scored A+ grade in all subjects in her Class 10 exams, she has also won prizes for elocution competitions at the district level. A nature enthusiast, she has also come out with flying colours in competitions held at the sub-district level for budding, grafting and layering. A story written by her based on a real life character was published in the book ‘Pralayam 2018’ which was released in 2019. Mariya is studying in Class 12 and aspires to become a Gynaecologist. However, her parents cannot afford to send her to coaching classes for the NEET entrance exam.
