We Continue to Skill and Empower Children
Highlights of Our Work
We continue to skill and empower children of 10 to 14 years to achieve better learning outcomes and exercise good values and citizenship. Our children belong to under-resourced families in Kerala. Their parents work mostly as unskilled daily-wage labourers with an annual family income of less than 1 lakh rupees. We are piloting the projects in Government-aided schools in Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram & Pathanamthitta districts.
Skilled for Academic Excellence
We completed a project aimed at developing employability skills for ten children of grade 10 whose parents are unskilled daily-wage labourers. Five scored 95 per cent, while the others scored above 85 per cent in their grade 12 board exams. One of them has cleared the Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) entrance exam & has secured admission for Electronics & Communications Engineering at a government college in Kerala.
Training of Trainers
Our master trainers have trained four students at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Ernakulam, as course instructors to impart skill development and character education to the selected children.
School Supplies for the New Academic Year
Fifty selected children of a government-aided school in Ernakulam were thrilled to receive school supplies, including school bags, notebooks and writing stationery. In addition, the event allowed us to meet with their parents and connect with them.
Inauguration and Parent Orientation
Our skill development projects at two Government aided schools, in Thirumoolapuram, Tiruvalla and Thevara, Ernakulam, have been flagged off. Of the seventy children from under-resourced families enrolled, thirty children in grade five are learning to use and visualise the abacus tool; forty children in grade eight are learning to apply Vedic Math techniques to their school Math. The projects will span 15-18 months.
The parents were made aware of their role in the success of the projects. In addition, the results of a test that assessed the basic numeracy level of their children were shared with them. They expressed their joy on behalf of the children for being selected for the project. They also shared their expectations from the project.
Career Guidance and Counselling
We kicked off the Career Guidance and Counselling project for Grade ten students at Holy Family Higher Secondary School in Kanjikuzhy, Kottayam. A career guidance seminar was conducted for the children. We will follow it up with psychometric tests and one-on-one career counselling for each child and their parents.
